$6,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 490-1037

This original Civil War longarm is a Model 1860 Spencer repeating rifle as purchased by the US Navy and represents the first Spencer of any type purchased by the United States.

In very good original condition, this Spencer bears serial #59 out of 750 of this pattern purchased by the U. S. Navy. Weapon is .52 caliber with six grooved rifling in the bore which is dark and only slightly dirty and could easily be cleaned up.

Rifle measures 47” overall with a 30” round barrel that shows some hints of original blue but is mostly dark plumb in color. Barrel is mated to a black walnut two-piece stock and is anchored by three matching barrel bands. The center band is fitted with a sling swivel. Barrel has a blade type front sight and flip-up rear sight. Beneath muzzle is a lug for a sword bayonet.

Receiver frame exhibits light pitting and a smooth, mottled gray colored surface. Strong three-line top plate stamping with original maker address “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860”. Mechanics are good. Hammer and lockplate match receiver in color. Magazine operates properly and has a good spring.

Full length black walnut stock does not appear to have been cleaned. No visible government cartouches on stock. Wood surface has dings, dents, and normal scuffing from use and age. Stock in area of the toe has an old 1.50 inch chip that is not very visible due to its age and patina. Stock retains iron swivel just forward of toe.     [ad]
