U. S. SPRINGFIELD M1863 TYPE I MUSKET DATED 1863, WITH BAYONET

$1,295.00 SOLD

Item Code: 904-01

This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type 1, single-shot muzzleloader in complete, original condition. The Springfield M1863 Type 1 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. Over two hundred seventy thousand such weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during the war years.

All gunmetal is clean and exhibits a nice dark patina. Lock surface wears a dark mottled patina with honest age and wear. “1863” stamped behind the hammer. Lock markings with the “Eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” are sharp and clear in front of the hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer with its beveled edges has the same smooth patina as the rest of the lock plate components. Breech area of the barrel shows the faint date “1863” on the top facet. Proofmarks are on the barrel facet. Original nipple and rear sight.

Mechanics crisp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. This type musket was produced without barrel springs. The three screw-tightened barrel bands are correct and in place…although two are upside down. Retains its original steel straight-shank ramrod that has the threaded tip. Black walnut stock is good and appears never to have been cleaned. Has the usual dings and scratches normal with age and use. There is a 1-inch-long ding/dent along the barrel on the left side between the second and third barrel bands. Two faint government inspector cartouches can be seen on the flat opposite the hammer. The buttplate is faintly stamped “US”.

Springfield bayonet matches the color of the musket. Bayonet is in good condition with no nicks or scratches. Faintly stamped “US”.

This is a fine, original Springfield type-1 rifle-musket with bayonet!  [jet]
