This original Civil War artifact is a .69 caliber percussion rifled musket manufactured in 1861 by the Philadelphia firm of P. S. Justice. In very good overall condition, this longarm is one of almost 2,200 muskets contracted by P. S. Justice early in the war to meet the needs of the Union army and his deliveries were among the fastest from any American arms producer during the war.

This single-shot muzzleloader is the PS Justice Second Type model that has three-groove rifling, brass mountings including a patchbox and brass barrel bands, no barrel springs and the distinctive double-curved brass triggerguard. Round barrel measures 39” long and is fitted to a black walnut one piece stock. Barrel has the two-piece rear leaf sight and a brass blade front sight.  Bright bore exhibits three-groove shallow rifling. Barrel surface has a semi-bright patina with scattered age spots and is stamping “P. S. JUSTICE / PHILADA”. Lockplate is a gunmetal coloring, as is the high-spur hammer and nipple bolster. Mechanics are strong.  No proof marks visible. No cartouches. Walnut stock surface is light and appears uncleaned with a consistent patina overall. A seldom seen P. S. Justice contract .69 caliber rifled musket with character.   [ff]
