This Model 1816 Harpers Ferry .69 caliber smoothbore musket was altered from flintlock to percussion with a ‘cone-in’ conversion. In good condition, the single-shot musket has had all its gunmetal cleaned to a bright sheen. The three iron-band musket has a 42” barrel with three iron springs which secure the barrel to the full size stock. Bore is semi-bright and shows just very light pitting. Barrel has no rear sight as normal with a small, blade-shaped, brass front sight mounted on the double upper barrel band. Barrel muzzle has a small bayo lug mounted on top of barrel. Bolster area shows light pitting and exhibits a slight swell on the barrel that extends 2¾” from the breech tang. This cone-in alteration piece is not recommended for actual shooting and has the possibility for bursting.

Left barrel facet exhibits the proofmarks “P / V / eaglehead.” Barrel breech behind nipple shows the stamped number “40” and a worn letter above while the tang is dated “1832.” Lockplate marked “HARPERS / FERRY / 1832” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. Forward of the hammer are traces of the “spreadwinged eagle / U.S.” worn away from cleaning. Flat lockplate front is beveled while the rear or tail section is rounded to a smooth point. All of the major components, including the crews on this longarm, show the sub-inspector’s letter of “O.”

Black walnut stock has been lightly cleaned at one time. Retains a mellow hue with normal scuffs and dents to the wood. Visible on the stock flat behind the sideplate is a marking “A R / V.” Flat maintains edges that have some sharpness and are not rounded over. Has its button-head steel ramrod. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one at the triggerguard bow. Butt plate is marked with a horizontal “US” on the tang. A good-looking collectible Harpers Ferry conversion musket.
