CONFEDERATE IMPORT OF A BRITISH PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKET

$3,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3651

This E.P. Bond rifle musket has the engraved Confederate inventory number “5053” on the tang of the brass buttplate. The ramrod is not engraved.

The Confederate government contracted for the purchase of 30,000 Enfield Rifle Muskets to be delivered in October 1861 through April 1862. These firearms had hand engraved inventory numbers put on the tang of the buttplates; 3 series were to be delivered, each numbered 1 to 10,000, with the second series engraved with the letter “A” and third series letter “B”. This firearm with number “5053” was in the first shipment of these arms to the Confederacy.

Letter “B” for Bond stamped on the stock near buttplate tang, which represents the maker. Wood has been sanded, with two minor dings near bottom band, opposite sides. Wood has no other markings, British or Confederate! Lockplate markings strong: “E.P. BOND / LONDON” sharp and crisp. Mechanically perfect.

Barrel lightly cleaned, with powder wear/pitting along nipple/breech area. Rest of barrel smooth with semi-bright patina. Barrel has no rifling, possibly made into a shotgun post-war. Rear sight intact, sans leaf sight. All brass furniture original to the firearm, polished years ago; starting to acquire a more pleasing patina. Lower barrel bands loose, need tightened.

An original British Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle musket by contractor E.P. Bond of London, imported and used by Confederate forces in the American Civil War.  [ws]
