This longarm is a Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 rifle made by the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. This single trigger, straight-breech, single shot breechloader is a .52 caliber percussion rifle. Total production numbers for this model Sharps is 7,000 rifles that fall into the serial range of #C 30,000 to C 40,000. This rifle’s serial # C, 37112 is located at the top of the receiver tang. Rifle measures 47” overall and features a 30” long round barrel without a bayonet lug that is mated to a two-piece black walnut stock. Barrel is stamped “NEW MODEL 1863” forward of the breech and “SHARPS RIFLE / MANUFG CO. / HARTFORD CONN.” in front of the long range, folding rear sight. Sight stamped with the Lawrence patent date. Barrel is inspector-marked on the left facet with “T.W.B.” Bore is clean and bright with good six-groove rifling.

Shoulder stock has two faint government cartouches on the left wrist area, no sling ring or bar, and features an iron patchbox on the right side of the butt. Full forend stock is secured to the barrel with three-barrel bands. Entire walnut stock not refinished and shows numerous small dents or dings.

Barrel is plumb in color. Hints of the case colors are visible on receiver, lockplate and triggerguard. Sub-inspector marks appear on all major components, i.e. receiver, lockplate, patchbox door, buttplate, hammer, and all barrel bands. Mechanics are very strong and crisp. All lockplate patent markings are crisp. Frame screws slightly buggered.
