MODEL 1861 BRIDESBURG-CONTRACT MUSKET, DATED 1863

$1,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 928-01

The Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA had one of the largest contracts for arms award during the Civil War. This musket is one of their fine products.

The weapon has a barrel that is turning plumb brown. There are some lighter areas around the muzzle and at the breech. Front and rear sight are present. Rear sight has both flip-up leaves. Barrel has marks showing that it may have been in a vice at one time. Breech area has a strong “VP” and a weak eaglehead. Top of breech is heavily pitted from use which all but obliterates the barrel date, however the numeral “3” of 1863 is still visible. Bore is atrocious and is dirty to the point that rifling cannot be seen. Nipple is original and shows some light surface rust.

Lockplate matches the barrel with a dark finish but has been rubbed clean in several spots. There is a strong spread-winged eagle and “US” over “BRIDESBURG” forward of the hammer and a strong 1863 behind it. Hammer matches barrel and lock and works well. Action is crisp.

All three barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U.” Bands have been cleaned. Edges show light wear.

Walnut stock has the usual dings and dents from age and use but no more than usual. There is a burned out section of wood behind the nipple and a small chip on the opposite side of the barrel tang. Left flat has no cartouche marks but does have the carved initials “J.D.T.” that were once filled in with a red enamel, the remains of which have turned orange with age. Small thin chip is present below lock with another old chip forward of the lock.

Buttplate matches the rest of the metal on the rifle and has a strong “US” on tang. Triggerguard shows light cleaning. Both sling swivels are present.

Ramrod is correct tulip head with swelled shank and is complete with threads on tip. Wood of the ramrod channel shows light scattered chipping.

This rifle certainly saw use.  [ad]
