This musket is a Liège (Belgium) made gun, a copy of a French Model 1857 Rifle Musket. Round barrel measures approximately 40 ½”, is the standard (French) .69/.70 caliber, and is rifled. Bore is clean with scattered fine pitting, and good rifling. Long-range rear sight and blade front sight. Two single barrel bands and “double band” nose cap. Band springs used to hold barrel bands in place. Sling swivels attached on middle barrel band and at front of the trigger guard. Typical back action lock with huge hammer. Lock plate marked “TANNER & CIE / LIEGE”. Complete original ramrod. Liege proof marks appear on many parts: lock plate, butt plate, trigger guard, barrel, barrel bands, and ramrod. All gun metal has similar dark patina and wear except top of barrel which is somewhat brighter.

Musket stock is in very good condition. Original finish and untouched patina. No chips or gouges in the wood; only a very few dings. Multiple clearly visible cartouches on the stock. The right side of the shoulder stock also bears the maker’s name, “TANNER & CIE / LIEGE”.

Accompanying bayonet is the new Model 1857 bayonet. Typical triangular socket bayonet in very nice condition. The blade bears a dark patina where the bluing has aged, while the socket is a lighter shade, as it was not blued. Liege proof mark appears on the elbow. The bayonet fits the musket perfectly.

This is a very nice untouched rifle musket typical of European imports during the Civil War…with a bayonet!   [jet]
