MASSIVE HEAVY-BARRELED, PERCUSSION BENCH REST TARGET RIFLE BY DITZEL OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY

$1,495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4662

This large, heavy-barreled, half-stock, bench rest target rifle is a custom longarm manufactured by Ditzel & B of Newark, N.J. In very good condition, the .40 caliber percussion rifle measures 46” in overall in length. The 30 ¼” long heavy barrel is octagonal. Barrel retains most of its original finish and is marked on the top flat “R. FLOCKE.” Muzzle has a mortised iron blade front sight and a circular peep sight mounted on the barrel tang. There was a mortise cut for a rear sight on the barrel but this has been filled with a matching piece of iron. Bore looks to have good rifling. Barrel breech has a bolster with a swirled decoration and a small fence. Nipple is original. Hammer does not hold at half or full cock. Weapon has double set triggers.

This distinct appearing, muzzle-loading rifle is fitted with a fine walnut half-stock that has a German silver nose cap, buttstock and triggerguard. Buttstock has extensions on each edge to lock into the shooters shoulder. Each of these extensions ends in a round quillon. The triggerguard has decorative finger rests. The lock screw has a small German silver serpentine escutcheon while the barrel wedge-pin has an oval on each side. The left side of the butt has a low cheek rest. The wood is dark and is free of cracks and shows only minor wear.

Plain wooden ramrod is present.

An attractive weapon in very nice condition that just needs a little work on the action.  [ad]
