The Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA had one of the largest contracts for arms awarded during the Civil War. This musket is one of their fine products.
The weapon has a barrel that is semi-bright. There is some light scattered mottling, especially near the breech. Front and rear sight are present. Rear sight has both flip-up leaves. Breech area has a worn “VP” and a no eaglehead. Top of breech is lightly pitted and has a barrel date of “1863.” Bore has good rifling with scattered light pitting in several spots. Nipple is original and shows some dirt and pitting around its base.
Lockplate matches the barrel with a semi-bright appearance. It has a strong spread-winged eagle and “US” over “BRIDESBURG” forward of the hammer and a strong 1863 behind it. Hammer matches barrel and lock and works well. Action is good.
All three barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U.” Bands match the rest of the iron on the weapon.
Walnut stock has the usual dings and dents from age and use but no more than usual. Left flat has two faint but complete inspector’s cartouche marks. Stock does not exhibit any cracks.
Buttplate matches the rest of the metal on the rifle and has a strong “US” on tang. Triggerguard matches as well. Both sling swivels are present.
Ramrod is correct tulip head with swelled shank and is complete with threads on tip. Wood of the ramrod channel shows very few old chips. Nothing that detracts.
Solid representative piece of a Civil War infantry weapon. [ad]
