M1860 SPENCER RIFLE IN GOOD CONDITION

This original Civil War longarm is a Model 1860 Spencer repeating rifle bearing serial number 3886. Rifle measures 47” overall with a 30” round barrel that shows some hints of original blue but is mostly dark plumb in color. Barrel has a blade type front sight and flip-up rear sight. Weapon is .52 caliber with six grooved rifling in the bore which is dark and dirty and might be cleaned up with a good scrubbing.

Barrel is held to the stock by three matching barrel bands. Each show some hints of case colors but are mostly dark. Two of the three show small areas of pitting. The center band is fitted with a sling swivel.

Receiver frame exhibits light pitting and a smooth, mottled gray colored surface. Worn three-line top plate stamping with original maker’s address “SPENCER REPEATING / RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS / PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860”. Mechanics are good. Hammer and lockplate match receiver in color. Magazine operates properly and has a good spring.

Full length black walnut stock does not appear to have been cleaned. There are no visible government cartouche marks on the stock. Wood surface has dings, dents, and normal scuffing from use and age as well as some dark discoloration on the edge of the butt. Left side of the comb has four old notches cut into it with another at the combs forward edge. Stock retains iron swivel just forward of toe. No cracks are visible. Buttplate exhibits some light to moderate pitting.

For weapon that saw some use this Spencer is in very good condition. [AD]
