U. S. SPRINGFIELD M1863 MUSKET DATED 1864

$2,295.00 SOLD

Item Code: 982-10

This Civil War longarm is a .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863, Type II, single-shot muzzleloader in complete, original condition. The Springfield M1863 Type 1 musket was a government arsenal product from Springfield, Massachusetts. Over two hundred fifty thousand such weapons were produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department during 1864-1865.

All gunmetal is clean and exhibits a bright finish with the exception of the casehardened lock and hammer which are a uniform dark gray color. “1864” stamped behind the hammer. Lock markings with the “Eagle / U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” are sharp and clear in front of the hammer. The distinctive “S” shaped hammer with its beveled edges has the same smooth patina as the rest of the lock plate. Bolster retains a decent eagle motif. Breech area of the barrel shows light pitting with a matching “1864” date stamp. The “VP [eagle]” are visible on the left barrel facet. Original two-leaf rear sight.

Mechanics crisp. Bore is bright with strong rifling. This version of the Model 1864 musket was produced with barrel band springs. Retains its original steel straight-shank ramrod that has the threaded tip. Black walnut stock is very nice with original color and finish. Has few of the usual dings and scratches normally found on weapons of this age.  No government inspector cartouches can be seen. The buttplate is stamped “US” and “30”.

This is a fine, original Springfield type II rifle-musket.  [jet]
