FLINTLOCK IN THE HESSE-HANAU CORPS OF SHORT JAEGERS PATTERN

$15,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 401-27

65 cal., 28" octagon barrel with a very good but dirty bore which shows strong rifling. The barrel is an overall dull pewter gunmetal gray with scattered very light oxidation staining. There is a simple brass front sight and two-leaf rear sight and the rifle is engraved "25" three inches from the muzzle. The flat stepped lock is marked “I. C. Stohr/ A. Hanau” and features a faceted iron pan, gooseneck cock and unbridled frizzen.

The attendant metal surfaces are the same nice dull pewter patina as the barrel, showing only sparsely scattered light oxidation staining, the face of the frizzen with light marks from striking; the gun is in original flint in every respect. The rifle features a brass nosecap, dual brass ramrod thimbles and a simple brass tailpipe. The Jaeger-style guard shows chiseled front and rear extensions and has a large rearward curving "grip". There is a heavy faceted buttplate and the sideplate is the semi-serpentine style seen on Hesse-Hanau and Hesse-Cassell Jaeger rifles of the period with a small teat at its rear; all the brass is a nice tarnished goldenrod patina.

The European walnut stock rates very good for its age with sharp edges and the overall minor dings and handling marks one would expect from a field-used arm. There is raised island carving around the lock and left stock flat as well as the barrels tang with a nice carved flourish ahead of the left-side cheekpiece. The rifle features a sliding wooden patchbox. The original brass-tipped iron ramrod is present as are the original bail-style sling swivels.

A lovely antique Jaeger rifle overall in a very fine state of condition.  [SS]
