This Colt Special Model 1861 musket was made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut.

Longarm is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader with the standard 40” round barrel. The surface of the barrel, like all the metal surfaces on the weapon, are starting to turn a plumb brown. Rear sight with flip up leaves has much of its original blue remaining. Front blade sight is present at muzzle. Breech area around the nipple has some light surface pitting. Breech is strongly stamped on left flat with “M.N.M. STEEL.” This same area bears the stamped number”3189.” There is also a strong “VP” with eaglehead. Top of breech is dated “1864.” Eagle on bolster is strong. Original nipple is present. Bore is mostly clean with light rifling. Barrel is secured by three iron bands each marked with a strong “U” stamping and screws at bottom. Bands are on backwards. There are no band springs on this model. Sling swivels are present on triggerguard and middle band

Lockplate has strong markings of “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT.” forward of the hammer. Behind the hammer is “1864” in strong clear numerals. Action is crisp and holds at half and full cock and falls properly when trigger is squeezed.

Black walnut stock is in good original condition and shows scattered minor imperfections from age and use. No sign of any cracks.  Butt is stamped at bottom with “3189” over initials that look to be “C.L.M.” Stock flat opposite the hammer shows two very strong government inspector cartouches. Lock screws are original and show light wear. Wood lines are still good.

Buttplate has a good “US” stamped on the tang and stamped in the wood above it is “E.M.W.”

Original ramrod is present and complete with the threaded tip. Wooden tompion is also present.

Very nice M1861 Colt Special musket in good overall condition.  [ad]
