Weapon is three banded with brass furniture.
The .58 caliber barrel was originally finished brown and is now turning dark with scattered worn areas showing up a little brighter. There is some light pitting in the bolster area. Rear sight is the two leaf flip-up sight while the front sight is iron pyramid type mortised into the barrel above the muzzle. Bayonet lug is present under the muzzle. Barrel is faintly marked on top behind rear sight with “P.S. JUSTICE / PHILAD.” In two lines. Bore is dark with some rings of dirt and there is no sign of rifling.
Lockplate was originally made for a flintlock and filled in holes can be seen upon close examination. Lock has a dark patina over most of its surface. It has a rounded front and a rounded point at rear. The edge is beveled forward of the hammer and flush behind it. Lock is marked forward of the hammer with a faint “P.S. JUSTICE / PHILAD.” In two lines. Action works well but full-cock is a bit stiff. Hammer head has light pitting.
Walnut stock is dark and looks to be untouched and shows the usual light wear from age, use and storage. Right side of the butt has brass patchbox that opens and closes properly. No cartouche is visible.
Buttplate, double curve triggerguard, nose cap and barrel bands are also brass. Bands are anchored by screws. There are no band springs.
Iron ramrod has an Enfield type knurled head minus the slot. Threaded tip is present on opposite end. [AD]
