Weapon has a 32 5/8 inch long blued barrel. It has the correct blade front sight while at rear is the Buffington sight that can be adjusted for elevation and windage. Top of sight is marked with a letter “R” for “rifle.” Sight is complete. Elevation and windage screws operate well. Breech is stamped with “VP” and eaglehead with the letter “A” stamped on top of the barrel in the same area. Bore is clean and the rifling is fair. Barrel is attached to the rifle stock by two blued barrel bands both of which are stamped with a horizontal “U.”

Lock surface has worn edges. There is a strong spread-winged eagle stamped forward of the hammer followed by a “U. S.” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Action works properly. Breech shows some case colors on exterior while the colors are stronger on the interior. Serial number on the breech is 538764. Top of breech at hinge is clearly marked “U.S. MODEL 1884.”

Wood stock is untouched and shows just the usual minor signs of wear. Left side has a cartouche that reads “SWP” over “1892.” Forward of this is a small marking that reads “74^th REGT.” The letter “P” in a circle is stamped behind the triggerguard. Right side of the butt is marked “74” in 1.00 inch high numbers over “309.” Buttplate is dark and has a good “US” stamping. “309” is stamped in the wood above the tang.

Ramrod bayonet operates properly. Both sling swivels and the stacking swivels are present.  [ad]
