Barrel surface has turned dark throughout. Front blade sight is present as is correct flip-up leaf rear sight with sliding appture. Breech and bolster area show moderate to heavy pitting. Viewer’s marks are present on the left side of the barrel at breech along with the number “24” stamped twice indicating the bore is .58 caliber. Bore is dark and dirty but shows good rifling.

The lockplate and hammer are very dark and have light surface pitting throughout. Lock markings are the standard Queen’s crown minus the “VR” back of the hammer with block letters “1862” over “TOWER” forward of the hammer. Mechanics are strong.

Black walnut stock appears to be untouched and has the usual dings, dents and scratches consistent with age. There is one 0.50 inch closed crack behind the lock and there is some “burnout” behind the hammer. There is also a closed crack running from one of the lock screw escutcheons toward the breech with a similar crack on the shoulder by the barrel tang. Right side of the stock has a nice maker’s mark of an oval with “W & C SCOTT & SON / SMALL ARMS FACTORY / 95 BATH ST. / BIRMINGHAM.” Maker’s name also appear stamped into the wood of the ramrod channel. Left side of the butt has faintly carved or scratched initials “GMD.” Two crowns are stamped in the wood just to the rear of the triggerguard.

Lockplate screw heads show light wear. All three barrel bands are present as well as both sling swivels. Correct ramrod is present and is complete with the threaded tip. Ramrod channel shows minor wear.

All brass furniture exhibits a dark patina.  [AD]
