MODEL 1842 SPRINGFIELD RIFLED MUSKET

$2,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 928-09

Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Springfield. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition with scattered dark spotting. The barrel was later rifled and rear sight added. Viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech. The breech plug tang features the year “1853”. An original ’42 ramrod is present but was not altered for elongated balls. The threaded is perfect. The bore is clean with light rifling. The hammer and lock plate are in very nice condition. The US and eagle retain majority of their detail stamped in front of the hammer. “SPRING / FIELD / 1853” is stamped clearly behind the hammer. Hammer screw is a darker color and may be a replacement. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Butt plate is stamped “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, and swivels are present and in good condition. All gun metal is clean with a light gray color with areas of darker tarnishing and light speckling/surface finger prints.

The walnut stock is in very good condition with only a very few minor dings and dents. No cartouche is visible on left flat but sharp edges show no sign of sanding. A couple small sub-inspector stamps are also present around the butt plate.

This is a good example of an 1842 smoothbore, that was later rifled.   [jet]
