MOORE-ENFIELD RIFLE MUSKET

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-357

American copy of the British Enfield Pattern 1853 rifle-musket, in very good condition. Made by J.P Moore’s Sons in New York City.

Weapon measures a total length of 55” with a 39” long barrel. Barrel surface is bright with moderate scattered mottling and very light scattered surface pitting in areas. The breech is stamped with two “25” marks, one is strong and the other is weak. These marks indicate the bore is .577 caliber. There are also two indistinct English marks which are correct, as it is known that some barrels were imported for these weapons. Long range rear sight is complete and the blade front sight/bayonet lug is also present. Nipple is original. Bore is dirty but rifling is good.

The lockplate and hammer are clean with a light surface patina and scattered spots of oxidation. Lock has the Moore markings of an eagle upon a shield with an “M” in the shield. This mark is located behind the hammer and the date “1863” is stamped in front of the hammer. Hammer bears engraved edge details and the lock has a border of two parallel lines. Mechanics are strong.

Black walnut stock is strong with a clean surface and original finish. It exhibits usual dings and dents consistent with age. Left side has a small closed crack running from one of the lock screw escutcheons towards the breech.

Has original full length ramrod, barrel bands, and both sling swivels. Nose cap, trigger guard, and butt plate are all of brass and exhibits a light patina.  [AD]
