MODEL 1868 SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR RIFLE

$1,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-359

This rifle is trapdoor in .50 caliber centerfire. The breech loading “Trapdoor” mechanism was designed by Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin of the Springfield Armory. This type was produced between 1868 and 1872.

This is the Model 1868 two-band version. Dated 1864 on the lock plate and 1870 on the receiver. The metallic components -- barrel, receiver, barrel bands, cleaning rod, trigger guard and butt plate -- exhibit uniform light gray patina and mild surface wear. The lock plate still shows a nice eagle motif and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” marking. Lock action is tight and crisp and the receiver mechanism operates well.  Serial number 43126 is found on the left side of the barrel and receiver.  Butt plate is marked with a strong “US”.  The bore is clear with strong rifling but exhibits minor pitting throughout.

The walnut stock retains original finish and has an attractive grain. There are a few dents on the underside behind the trigger guard tang, but otherwise only the usual minor dings from age. No cracks. A single oval inspector’s cartouche on the flat opposite the lock plate as well as a large letter “T” stamped into the wood.  A very nice trapdoor rifle.   [jet]
