NORWICH CONTRACT MODEL 1861 MUSKET DATED 1863

$3,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-170

Original Model 1861 .58 caliber rifle-musket in nice condition overall. Rifle was produced by the Norwich Arms Company of Norwich, Connecticut.

Barrel is bright with scattered light to moderate mottling over its surface. The only pitting visible is a small amount around the nipple. Correct front and two-leaf rear sights are present. Left flat of the barrel at the breech has a crisp mark of “VP” with eaglehead. Below these marks, just above the stock, the barrel is stamped “GT.”  Forward of the barrel tang there is a very strong date of “1863.” Bolster retains the original nipple. Bore has excellent rifling but is very dirty and needs scrubbed.

The lockplate and hammer have been lightly cleaned but match the barrel well. There is a good stamping of a spreadwinged eagle forward of the hammer and an equally good “US” over “NORWICH.” Behind the hammer is a crisp date of “1863.” Bolster screw shows some wear but hammer screw is very good as are the lockplate screws. Action is strong and works properly.

Black walnut stock is in very nice condition and exhibits only the usual dings and scratches consistent with age. There are no cracks. The flat opposite the lock has three very strong cartouche marks and a very clear and readable “JAS.’ D MOWRY / NORWICH / CONN” in an oval. There are also several scratches in this area. Stock has sharp lines and a ramrod channel that shows little wear.

The musket’s original tulip-head steel ramrod with swell retains its threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present and all three barrel bands are stamped with a “U.” Iron buttplate has strong “US” stamped on tang with a very small “52” stamped near the heel.  [AD]
