M-1861 RIFLE MUSKET BY C.D. SCHUBARTH, DATED 1863

$3,350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 218-541

This Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket, dated 1863, is in complete, fine condition. Produced by C. D. Schubarth and Co. of Providence, Rhode Island.  In 1862, the firm received a government contract from the US Ordnance Department for 9,500 such weapons.

The 40” long barrel exhibits just a few scattered areas of very light pitting, mostly near breech. Barrel exhibits some spotty mottling while all other gun metal (lockplate, hammer, butt plate, bands, trigger guard, rear sight, and ramrod) all wear the same dull silver look. Lock plate is stamped “U. S. / C.D. SCHUBARTH / PROVIDENCE” in front of the hammer and stamped “1863” behind hammer. A spread-winged eagle motif is stamped on lockplate between hammer and bolster.

Steel butt plate strongly stamped with “U S”. Has the original two-leaf rear sight and small blade front sight. Matching “1863” barrel date stamp is on the breech top flat. Barrel bore is clean and bright with excellent rifling. All screw heads are good with no wear. Government proof marks “V / P / [eagle head]” on left facet of the breech are light but clear. Mechanics are strong and crisp.

Black walnut full stock is in very good condition overall. Has clean edge contours on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock exhibits two strong government cartouches. No blemishes in the wood save usual dings and dents from use and storage. Retains its tulip-head steel ramrod with a threaded tip. Threaded end shows some pitting.

A very nice Civil War contract musket.  [jet]
