CONFEDERATE CONVERSION OF A HARPERS FERRY 1816 MUSKET

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3882

Single shot .69 muzzle loading smoothbore musket made at the Harpers Ferry Arsenal. This weapon began life as a flintlock and was converted by the Confederates to a percussion weapon using the drum method of conversion.

Barrel is semi-bright heavy mottling throughout as well as heavy pitting at the breech. Brass blade front sight is present on the rear most band of the double front band. There is no rear sight. Bayonet lug is present at top of the muzzle. No proof marks are visible at the breech but there is a clear barrel date of “1840.” Bore is pitted in one or two spots and has some light surface dirt but should clean up a bit.

Lock has a rounded beveled front with a pointed rear that is flush with the wood of the stock. Forward of the hammer is a somewhat muddled spread-winged eagle with a small “US” below it. Above the eagle is the remains of the brass pan in which the drum that houses a somewhat flattened original nipple sits. Stacked behind the civilian style serpentine hammer is a faint “HARPERS FERRY” with an unreadable date. Overall appearance of the lock is mottle with light surface rust. Action works properly.

Wood stock is in overall nice condition with only minor signs of surface wear. There is slight burn out present on the wood behind the hammer. Flat opposite the lock is stamped with the initials “L.A.S.” There is a small old gouge in the wood in the area of the lock.

Iron butt plate is very dark as are the barrel bands and trigger guard. Both sling swivels are present. Button head ramrod is full length with the threaded tip.  [ad]
