Item Code: 1000-89

This Model 1816 Springfield .69 caliber smoothbore was altered from flintlock to a “cone in barrel” percussion musket.

The musket has a 42” barrel secured with three barrel-bands that in turn are held in place with iron band springs. Bore is bright and clean. Barrel has no rear sight as normal and a small, blade-shaped, brass front sight mounted on the upper barrel band. Small bayonet lug mounted on top of barrel at muzzle. Left barrel facet exhibits very clear proof marks “P / [eagle head] / V” and other secondary markings. Barrel breech tang is stamped with “1839” date. Barrel surface is clean and mostly bright.

The early style of lockplate is marked “SPRING / FIELD / 1839” behind the rounded, high spur hammer. Forward of the hammer the “US” under a small eagle motif.  Frizzen pan space is filled with brass plug.

Original “button head” ramrod remains in excellent condition. Has both sling swivels, one at the middle band and one in front of the trigger guard bow. Butt plate is marked with a deep “US” on the tang. All gun metal is in good condition with many parts bearing small letter inspection stamps.

Black walnut stock has original color and finish. Minor scuffs and dents to the wood from age and use. Visible on the underside of the butt stock just behind the trigger guard backstrap are stamped initials, possibly the stock maker, and a three-letter oval inspection cartouche.  The edges of the raised “flats” on either side of the breech remain strong. Two oval cartouches are clearly seen on the left flat opposite the lock.  This stock is in exceptionally good condition.

A great early Springfield conversion musket!  [jet]
