HARPER'S FERRY M1842 US RIFLED PERCUSSION MUSKET

$1,450.00 SOLD

Item Code: 286-566

This longarm in good overall condition is an original .69 caliber Model 1842 and one of the seldom seen ‘rifled’ ’42 muzzleloaders made by the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal. In 1842, the need for more modern percussion ignition systems on US military arms signaled the end of the flintlock age and started the age of the cap and ball muzzleloader firearm. All surface metal has been lightly cleaned but still exhibits a dark mottled plum gray color blended with peppery scattered rust pitting.

Breech has heavy to moderate pitting at the bolster area.   Strong lock markings are the Mexican War-era “HARPERS / FERRY / 1846” behind the hammer.   Interestingly it appears that the eagle motif stampings in front of hammer were missed and never applied (?).  Lock mechanics are good but the half cock position slips. Needs adjustment, else tight. All proof marks “V / P / eaglehead” are visible on the barrel, as are the unique barrel markings indicating the Harpers Ferry armory. Rifled bore is good: semi-bright with scattered pitting and rifling worn but there. All the other iron components are consistent but barrel bands are worn and have been cleaned. No rear long-range sight on barrel but the sight area has had moderate scraping and cleaning. Detracts from the overall dark patina. No cartouches visible on stock. Black walnut stock not cleaned and has its share of scattered dings and nicks along with moderate edge rounding. Both swivel slings present but longarm has a modern reproduction ramrod. A rare Model 1842 Harper’s Ferry rifled musket of the Mexican War period.  [ra]
