$1,350.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: G3975

The Model 1863 “Zouave” rifle was produced by the Remington arms firm of Ilion New York between 1862 and 1865. This .58 caliber, single shot percussion muzzleloader is in nice overall condition. The Remington longarm rated as one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War era even though the rifles were never issued to the troops.

This “US” marked weapon measures 49” long with a 33” barrel secured to a black walnut stock with two brass barrel bands. Barrel retains most of its original bluing. Areas where it has worn off have dark patina. It has a two-leaf rear sight and a blade front sight with a bayonet lug welded to the barrel’s right side to accommodate the Remington saber bayonet. Left side of breech shows good proof marks of “VP” with eagle head. Left facet of the barrel shows strong and clear inspector marks of “STEEL” and a worn “H. S. L.” Top of breech exhibits a fair “1863” stamping. Barrel tang and area near nipple show light surface pitting. Bore has strong rifling with light scattered dirt and minor pitting in spots.

The lock plate has turned dark. It exhibits a strongly detailed spread-winged eagle over a crisp “U.S.” in front of the hammer. Forward of the eagle is “REMINGTON’S / ILION, N.Y.” Strong date of “1863” is present behind the hammer. Mechanics work properly and the original nipple is present.

Walnut stock exhibits some wear. Lines are good and some feathering shows on butt however there are numerous small scratches and rub marks. Two very strong government cartouches rest on the flat opposite the hammer. All furniture, including butt plate, trigger guard, barrel bands, nose cap, and patch box, are of lightly cleaned brass. Patch box still retains a rusted spare nipple inside.

Longarm has a replacement steel ramrod with an Enfield type slotted head and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present.  [ad]
