The barrel is semi-bright with light mottling and light pitting around the breech. Rear sight retains much of its blue and has one flip-up leaf. Front iron blade sight is present at muzzle. Left barrel flat is stamped with a very clear “VP” and eagle head. Top of the breech has a strong barrel date of 1863 despite pitting. Bore is very clean with good rifling however there is some scattered pitting.
The lock is semi-bright with some mottling around the edges. There is a crisp “1863” stamped behind the hammer. Forward of it is a weak spread-winged eagle and forward of that is a good “U.S.” over “NORFOLK.” Action works properly. Nipple is original. Clean out screw is good.
The wood stock has numerous small scuffs and scratches with a few scattered small gouges but still has a pleasing appearance. The flat opposite the lock has faint stamp that reads in part “…NORFOLK.” There is one closed crack running from the barrel tang to the top of the lock. All three barrel bands bear the horizontal “U” stamp.
Both sling swivels are present. Trigger guard and buttplate match the barrel and lock. Rear of trigger guard has an old painted white number “1.” Buttplate tang has a strong “US.” Tulip shaped swelled shank ramrod is full length with threads at bottom. [ad]
