SHARPS NEW MODEL 1859 RIFLE WITH 36 INCH BARREL

$4,250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-5521

The overall length of this single shot breech loading rifle is approx. 53.00 inches.

The barrel surface was blued but is now turning a plumb brown. There are no signs of any pitting. Rear sight is a single leaf with sliding aperture. The base of the sight is marked but it is almost gone and near unreadable. Iron blade front sight is mounted above the muzzle. Under the muzzle, and just forward of the forend, is a lug for a saber bayonet. According to Flayderman’s Gun Guide Sharps rifles with the 36.00 inch long barrel usually fall between serial numbers 36000 – 37000. This weapon bears serial number 36677.

Receiver retains hints of the original bluing but this too is turning a plumb brown. Surface is in very nice condition with no pitting. The left side of the receiver has a worn patent mark in two lines. Clearly visible on the first line is only “PAT” and below it is a faint date of “SEPT. ??th 1848.” The lock and hammer match the receiver in color and condition. The only mark remaining from the Lawrence patent is the single word “PAT.” On the lock the two-line marking of “SHARPS PAT. OCT. 5TH 1852” is readable but worn. Action works well. Nipple is original. Breechblock looks very clean and is free of pitting.

The stock is in nice condition with only the usual wear from age, storage and use. Much original feathering remains on the woods surface. There are no cracks but there are several dings and dents on the bottom of the butt around the sling swivel as well as a small circle, perhaps a little bigger than a pencil eraser, that looks to have been filled in with wood putty. Patch box retains some of the original blue but like the rest of the metal surfaces is turning plumb.

Trigger guard and buttplate also match in color. All three barrel bands are present. Two retain quite a bit of blue while the third is a bit warn. Both sling swivels are present.

A very nice looking weapon and one of only 600 made.  [ad]
