Styled after the French Charleville pattern, this is one of less than 2500 muskets made by John Miles of Bordentown, New Jersey.

The round barrel is 43” long. On the left side at the breech there is stamped “US” and a recessed oval that contains a worn eagle head proof mark. On the underside of the muzzle there is a bayonet lug. The original flint hammer, frizzen pan, feather spring and lock plate are in very good condition. Stamped on the lock plate behind the hammer is "MILES" and an eagle atop an oval with “US” inside appears between the hammer and feather spring. The hammer is complete and strong with a flint. The feather spring remains strong and the frizzen operates well. The hammer does not hold at half cock but holds well at full cock.

All fittings are iron including the butt plate, trigger guard, two middle barrel bands, band springs, nose cap/barrel band, sling swivels, and ramrod. The ramrod has a trumpet style head but has been broken and is now only 25” long; missing the threaded end. There is a fixed brass blade sight attached to the nose band. All iron gun metal is a uniform very dark brown color.

The stock is walnut with a rich color and patina. The wood has very few dings and dents but does have a few issues. There are two cracks in the stock on the underside running from the front edge of the lock plate around to the front of the trigger guard tang. There is also a piece missing that split off the right side from the nose band back (about 8”) toward the middle barrel band along the line of the front band spring. There are two sets of initials carved into the butt stock.

Overall condition is good.  [jet]
