.44-40 WINCHESTER 1873 THIRD MODEL CARBINE

$3,495.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 299-08

This is a good example of the iconic 1873 Winchester carbine, a very popular rifle to say the least, with more than 700,000 made from 1873 through 1924 and closely associated with the American west through countless appearances in period photographs and, of course, in movies. This is the standard configuration, using the popular .44 Winchester Center Fire cartridge also known as the .44-40, and is serial numbered 393411B, giving it an 1891 date of manufacture.

The markings are strong throughout. Barrel address: “WINCHESTER’S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN, CT / KING’S IMPROVED PATENT MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860.” Caliber designation between rear sight and breech: “44 WCF.” Serial number on tang. The metal is mostly gray in color, but smooth, and shows a few thin traces of blue in recessed areas. The magazine tube, like the barrel, is good. Both bands are in place. The rear sight is complete and the correct carbine sight with 1873 designation at top and range markings with bar in place. The receiver shows the correct rail and dust cover configuration for third model. The staple and sling ring are in place on the left. The screws are good and show little wear to the slots. The mechanics are good.

The forestock has good finish, a tight fit and good edges. We see just one ding to the left edge about half way between rear sight and band. The buttstock has nice color matching the forestock, but shows some chattering along the lower left at the belly. The buttplate shows gray and little salt and peppering from use and standing upright. The trap works fine and the cleaning rod sections are in place.

This is a basic piece in any collection of western Americana or cowboy gear.  [sr]
