Presented here is a partially ID’d Model 1843 Hall-North .52 caliber, breechloading percussion carbine, sometimes referred to as a Side Lever Hall. Top of flat receiver is clearly stamped with a five-line address with “U . S / S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN. / 1852”. Carbine has a 21” round barrel with two barrel bands that secure it to the walnut stock. No original colors and all metal wears a dark plum / mottled gray patina.  Steel barrel and receiver show very light pinprick pitting overall on a strong smooth surface.  Top flat of barrel exhibits the word stamping “STEEL” behind the open rear sight indicative of post 1848 production. Sling bar and ring tight but the upper part of bar has been bent slightly inward to restrict travel of the sling ring.

Robust stock is of black walnut and shows numerous dings and dents overall along with a 1” long crack at left side back tail of sling bar. A single government cartouche, visible at the left edge of the stock flat, is split by the above crack. Left side of stock bears the partial ID in hand carved letters “J. A.” with the same letters found on the stock bottom or toe area that read “J G A”. Retains its original button-head ramrod. This model was produced over the longest period of time and in the largest quantities of all of Hall’s many variations. A fine, collectible Hall breechloading carbine possibly used in the Civil War.
