Cal. 58 “Norfolk” produced by Welch, Brown and Company and made in Norfolk, CT. The lock surface is a dusky gray patina. Markings ” U.S./ NORFOLK, and the date “1862”are crisp. Crisp working lockwork. All other iron surfaces have a dusky gray semi-bright finish. Barrel marks “VP” over the correct Norfolk “Eagle”. No date is visible on the barrel. Also stamped on the barrel is F over 21 and 14 on the buttplate. Bore is dark but has excellent rifling. The rear sight is complete and functional and the ramrod is original. The stock is dark and in very good condition. No cartouche is visible on the stock. Welch and Brown manufactured only 18,000 of these rifles.
