Cal. 58 “Mowry” was produced by James D. Mowry and made in Norwich, CT. Markings are the standard eagle motif and ” U.S./ JAs D.MOWRY/NORWICH, CONN. and the date “1864”at the rear of the lock. Crisp working lockwork. Barrel marks “VP/ Eagle”, and “1864” at the end of the barrel. It also has the inspector mark L.E.M. on the barrel. The lock surface is a dusky gunmetal grey / peppery finish. All other iron surfaces are a matching patina. Bore has very good rifling and has a semi bright finish with areas of pitting. The rear sight is complete and functional. The ramrod is original. The stock is dark walnut with scattered nicks and scratches and has been lightly refinished. Inspectors mark is visible and located opposite the lockplate. Mowry manufactured 22,000 of these rifles in 1863 and 1864.
