Item Code: 218-381

This very fine specimen is a Model 1835 / 1840 U.S. flintlock musket altered to percussion. The US M1840 flintlock was the last standard production model flint lock longarm made. Often referred to as the Model 1835 musket before it was designated the M1840, this longarm was produced at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts and was among the 26,800 original M1840 flintlocks converted to percussion there circa 1849 to 1851. This musket is a .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader with a nipple in barrel conversion, sometimes called the ‘cone type’. Records indicate that this type of alteration was only performed at the National Armories.

The factory bright, 42” long steel barrel is secured to the stock with three barrel bands. The lock surface exhibits a fine light gray scheen with hints of original case-hardening visible. All metal lightly cleaned at one time. Face of plate is marked with “SPRING / FIELD / 1840” behind the long, high-spur hammer and exhibits a sharp American eagle motif over a small US in front of hammer. Mechanics are strong. No rear sight as usual. Crisp proof marks “V / P / eagle head” on the left breech. Sharp date “1849” visible on the barrel tang. Smooth bore is dusty bright with light spots of pitting. Will clean bright. Single cartouche on left flat above trigger. Fine trumpet-style ramrod. There is 3/4" x 1/4" shallow chip in the barrel just in front of the middle barrel band. Just in front of the chip is a fairly shallow, long scratch.  There are minor scattered scratches throughout, but that one is the most pronounced. There is also a small chip in the stock, which is visible in the last few photos. A super representative M1835 / M1840 Springfield conversion.
