This copy letter dates from 1902 and was composed by former Confederate General James Longstreet. The General is writing to former Union General Daniel E. Sickles saying that he is unable to keep his promise to attend the dedication of the statue erected to General Slocum due to a foot problem. Longstreet goes on to say “On that field (Gettysburg) you made your mark that will place you prominently before the world as one of the leading figures of the most important battle of the Civil War.” Longstreet goes on to state “I believe that it is now conceded that the advanced position at the Peach Orchard, taken by your corps and under your orders saved that battlefield to the Union cause.”

The letter is not signed by Longstreet but General Sickles has endorsed the letter along the bottom. It reads “A true copy. D. E. Sickles, Major General U. S. Army, Commd’ing Third Army Corps. (??) Ap. 15, 1909.”

The letter is in good condition and is entirely readable. When General Sickles endorsed the letter he drew a line in the margin to highlight Longstreet’s kind words about the movement of Sickles' corps on July 2nd. This is truly an interesting and outstanding document relating to the battle of Gettysburg.
