This relic conditioned scabbard is for an imported Model 1860 Cavalry saber. The item was recovered from East Cavalry Field at Gettysburg and was once part of the famous Shields Museum at Gettysburg. Still attached is a tag that reads “CIVIL WAR EXCAVATED SCABBARD-SHIELDS MUSEUM EAST BATTLEFIELD GETTYSBURG #231-384.” Someone has crossed out the word “EAST” to insert the word “WEST.”
The section of scabbard starts at the throat and runs approx. 25.25 inches. There are two or three dents in the area of the throat and there is heavy pitting throughout.
This exact item is pictured on page 92 of Frank Mroczka’s book “STARTING YOUR FIRST CIVIL WAR COLLECTION.”
