The face of this Model 1839 oval “US” cartridge box plate has a nice, clean, dark patina. The surface of the face is mostly free from scratches and has only a slight waviness to it.
The reverse has none of the lead fill and no hooks and has a black discoloration. The lead loss and the black discoloration may be an indication that the lead was melted out for use in making bullets or the plate may just have been caught in a fire on the field.
This item was recovered by John Cullison on Culp’s Hill and then became part of the Rosensteel family collection. This well-known collection formed the basis of the present Gettysburg National Park collection.
