This steel engraving was executed by H. B. Hall and published in 1876. The engraving is from an original oil painting by James Walker entitled “GETTYSBURG: REPULSE OF LONGSTREET’S ASSAULT.” The painting was commissioned and arranged by famous Gettysburg historian John B. Bachelder and when completed measured 7.50 x 20.00 feet. Bachelder issued this steel engraving for public consumption.

Usually when these engravings are encountered they are marred by water stains or discolored by the acid in the wood backings of the frame. This particular print is in excellent clean condition. There is nothing to detract from the print. It is clean and bright and comes housed in the original wooden frame.

The print adopts a perspective from the Union rear and encompasses most of the battlefield, from Big Round top on the left to the northern reaches of Cemetery Ridge on the right. The Confederate lines at Seminary Ridge are in the far distance, partially obscured by bursting shells. The image centers on the focal point of the Confederate assault, in the vicinity of what today are known as “The Copse of Trees” and “The Bloody Angle.” The composition has interesting elements throughout with Meade and his officers dominating the center, flanked on either side by artillery advancing into the fray and officers and men surrounding a wounded General Hancock. These are set against the whirlwind of battle, with Union units rushing forward to meet the Confederate advance, and dead and wounded men and horses and debris scattered on the field.

The original wood frame has a wide edge with a beaded inner border. The width of the frame edge is approx. 3.25 inches wide. The framed piece in total meas. approx. 45.00 x 25.25 inches. The frame is in good condition with only light wear to the edges. The reverse still has the original wood backing.

This is one of the nicest examples of this print that we have seen in some time.
