This cigar box contains shell fragments bullets and other items that were retrieved from the battlefield and in the collection of W. D. Scott who owned the building that was the Gettysburg Orphanage. 1 Fragment of a Schenkl shell. Fragment meas. approx. 6.25 inches long x 1.25 wide and is from the nose area of the shell.

1 Fragment from a 10lb Parrott shell that meas. approx. 6.00 inches long x 2,25 inches wide.

1 Fragment from a Parrott or Schenkl shell that meas. approx. 3.50 inches long x 1.50 inches wide.

1 Fragment from a 12lb spherical shell that meas. approx. 2.75 x 2.25 inches.

1 Fragment from a 6lb spherical shell that meas. approx. 2.00 inches x 2.25 inches. The only battery at Gettysburg which fired 6lb ammunition was Latham’s North Carolina battery.

1 Fragment from a 10lb Parrott shell that meas. approx. 2.00 x 1.25.

1 Fragment from a 10lb Parrott shell that meas. approx.3.75 x 1.00 inch at the widest.

Most of these fragments are very clean as you would expect battlefield picked up items to be. Also in the box are:

10 case shot balls

1 large canister ball

1 Bormann fuse under plug

1 side loader plug

1 large knife blade (rusted)

1 razor blade (rusted)

3 flat coin buttons

1 General Service Eagle button

5 knapsack or sword belt studs

3 knapsack hooks

1 knapsack triangle

1 brass musket hook

1 small black glass inkwell

1 used Artillery friction primer

5 dropped .58 minie balls

3 fired Gardner bullets

6 fired .58 minie balls

1 fired round ball

2 fired Enfield bullets

1 fired .69 minie ball

1 dropped Merrill Carbine bullet

All the bullets are gray as early pickups would be. The bullets were not out in the elements too long so they do not have the white oxidation usually found on dug bullets.

With the relics is an old paper label that meas. approx. 4.00 x 2.00 with an ink inscription that reads “CIVIL WAR RELICS- W. D. SCOTT.” Also in the box is a modern label written by Mr. Althoff that reads “FRPOM THE HOMSTEAD SALE-BALTIMORE ST. GETTYSBURG.” The “HOMESTEAD” is the modern name of the old Gettysburg Orphanage building.
