Wood based Gettysburg relic desk set in fantastic condition made by John Good who was one of the better known makers of these sets. This is an early item made before the front of the bases were marked “GETTYSBURG.” This piece also has a full label at back and a rare blue glass inkwell. In fact this is the first desk set we have seen using an inkwell of blue glass.

The wooden base of the piece meas. approx. 6.00 x 3.75 x 1.00 inch tall with a beveled front. The centerpiece of the set is a wonderful octagon inkwell with a pointed octagon cap with brass bezel and hinge. The glass of the inkwell has excellent color and is free of chips and cracks. One of the side panels of the inkwell has a small black paper label that reads “GETTYSBURG ‘63” while the front two panels have the remains of another label that may have contained floral decorations or pictures of John Burns and Jennie Wade. Just behind the inkwell at center rear is a 2.75 inch tip section of a triangular bayonet.

To the left of the centerpiece are a dropped Confederate .58 Gardner bullet, a three piece Virginia State Seal button with a pushed in face, a small iron case shot, unused percussion cap, a fired Union .58 three ring mini ball and a small shell fragment. To the right of the centerpiece is a General Service Eagle coat button, a dropped .58 three ring mini ball, a small iron case shot, a medium sized iron case shot and a large canister ball.

The paper tag on the back reads “WOOD FROM CULP’S HILL, BAYONET FROM SHERFY’S, SHELL FROM ROUND TOP, GRAPE SHOT FROM HANCOK’S POSITION, UNION AND CONFEDERATE BULLETS AND BUTTONS.”

John Good, who was a local Gettysburg furniture maker had a shop located in Race Horse Alley. He is well known for making many of these highly desirable Gettysburg relic desk sets.
