Published by Joseph Hoover, Philadelphia 1866. Lithograph with tintstone, 28” x 22”. Full title “Meeting of General Grant and Lee Prepatory to The Surrender of General Lee and his Entire Army to Lieut. General U.S. Grant, April 9th 1865”. A legend after Appomattox held that Lee surrendered to Grant outdoors in an apple orchard. In reality, Lee merely spent some time before his fateful meeting in such a setting and did not meet Grant on horseback until the day after the surrender. Outstanding color. Some slight age discoloration at top border and minor crazing along right border. Original frame 32.23” x 26.25” with gilt finish on front only. Some chips along frame edges with discoloration. A very scarce print.
