This shell fragment was found along the Taneytown Road. Fired during Pickett's Charge on July 3rd, it was part of one of the "overshoots" that fell far behind the Union lines.
The sabot system utilized on this type shell was a copper disc held in place by studs and secured with a center bolt. This particular example is somewhat distorted but carries the remains of its center bolt, which is bent to one side and fused to the disc. The bolt is rusted, and the sabot is green from verdigris.
