Flattened .58 cal. US Minie ball carved into a poker chip.

From the private Gettysburg collection of Emily Rosensteel (Mrs. George D. Rosensteel) comes this outstanding assemblage of fired and dropped lead Minie balls that were found at the Johns Farm in Gettysburg.

Emily married George Rosensteel, nephew to John H. Rosensteel, who lived through the three days of fighting in Gettysburg. John was also the founder of the well-known Rosensteel Collection; his nephew George, an avid relic collector himself, later built his own National Museum in Gettysburg. These bullets were recovered by “The Sanders Boys”, who lived on the Johns Farm, from whom they were acquired by the Rosensteels. The Rosensteel relic collection was later passed down to their daughter, Angela, who in 1941 married Larry Eckert. Eckert worked in his father-in-law's museum and operated the famed Electric Map until the property was sold to the U.S. government in 1972.

The Johns Farm was located in modern Colt Park on Johns Avenue, one block west of the American Civil War Museum.  The Johns House, a large gray painted farmhouse, still stands today.  Johns Avenue runs north-south parallel to Steinwehr Avenue, from Long Lane to South Washington Street.
