COLORFUL 1884 KURZ & ALLISON LITHOGRAPH OF PICKETT’S CHARGE FROM LEE’S HEADQUARTERS MUSEUM

Item Code: 806-232

This 1884 Kurz & Allison print of Pickett’s Charge comes in an old wooden frame with the original wood slat backing. Framed, the piece meas. approx. 33.00 inches long x 25.00 inches high. The image itself meas. approx. 27.25 x 19.50 inches.

This lithograph shows the high point of Pickett’s Charge and is based on the well-known cyclorama painting by Paul Philippoteaux. General Armistead’s men have crossed the stone wall into the area by the Copse of Trees. The General is seen being shot from his horse while Lieutenant Cushing of the Union battery facing Armistead’s Confederates falls over one of his guns. Also, like the cyclorama there is a group of Confederate prisoners being led to the rear by Union guards. Even the stonewalls in the lithograph mimic those found in the cyclorama painting. The background is filled with reinforcements coming up for both sides and Little and Big Round Top can also be seen. Across the bottom of the print is “THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG.”

The lithograph looks to be in good condition. It is free of rips or creases and the colors are good. There is a small water stain in the upper left corner and the upper right center shows some discoloration from the wood slats on the back. The mount edges also show age and dirt.

For years this print hung in the well-known Lee’s Headquarters Museum just west of Gettysburg. When that museum closed at the end of 2014 this print was released for sale.
