MODEL 1860 CAVALRY SABER FROM LEE’S HEADQUARTERS MUSEUM

$1,850.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 821-09

The blade of this saber has aged dark but there is no pitting and is otherwise nice. The edge has numerous small nicks. The ricasso is blank and unmarked. Attached to one side of the blade is an old piece of masking tape with the number “87” written on it. This is no doubt and identifying number for the museum. The original leather washer is present at the base of the ricasso.

The hilt has a nice dark brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard. The grip has all its leather and the wire wrap is complete. There are no visible markings on the hilt.

The scabbard has been painted black, which seems to be a hallmark of swords from this collection, but it is complete with the throat and both mounts and rings. There are a number of small dents in the lower third above the drag.

This sword has all the signs of having seen use and despite the painted scabbard is still in good condition.

As stated above this item is from the collection of the well-known Lee’s Headquarters Museum and is listed in a museum inventory that dates from the 1930’s or 40’s. The museum opened in the 1920’s and closed its doors in late 2014.  It was located on US Route 30 just west of Gettysburg.
