Cane was made with wood gathered on the battlefield of Gettysburg. These canes are often referred to as “Veterans” canes and were made by local people for sale at reunions and local Gettysburg events. The wood was harvested from different locations on the battlefield, carved into canes, burned with different decorations and then stamped with the location on the field where the wood was harvested.
This cane follows a rather curvy line with the top most curve used as the handle. It meas. approx. 37.00 inches long. The top 6.00/ inches still retains some of the original bark that has smoothed over time from handling and use.
Burned into the wood just below the handle is a rectangle of dots. At the center of this rectangle stamped in black ink is “GETTYSBURG JULY 1-2-3 1863, WOOD FROM ROUND TOP.” Stamping is strong but part of the word “ROUND” is missing. The rest of the cane is decorated with geometric shapes.
The wood retains a nice light finish and all of the art is visible.
