This Federal infantry waist belt plate, once part of the extensive Rosensteel Civil War Collection of Gettysburg, is of the early regulation 1839 pattern and measures 88mm x 58mm. Found at an undisclosed location on the Gettysburg battlefield, this partially IDd, die-struck, rolled, oval plate is in fine, strong condition.
Specimen has the large raised letters “US” on the face and exhibits a wonderful, dark chocolate colored patina overall. Backside of the plate, complete with its brass ‘puppy paw’ hooks and clasp, all intact, is lead filled and still in strong, smooth, non-erosive condition. Lead is smooth and strong and just visible under the paws are the handcarved initials “A H” or “AN”. Face of the plate exhibits a slightly convex shape and is edged with double borders with one tiny edge nick at the seven o’clock position.
This very fine condition, brass U.S. oval waist belt plate from the Gettysburg Rosensteel collection is an artifact that would be worthy of any Civil War display or plate collection. [RA]
