This is an excavated iron canister ball. It is 1 ½” in diameter which suggests it probably was fired from a 12-pounder Napoleon cannon. Heavily rusted and uncoated. Solid with moderate pitting. Recovered in the 1960s, in woods east of Devil’s Den on Second Days’ Battlefield at Gettysburg.

This relic was once part of the Iva Rosensteel collection. Mrs. Rosensteel is the sister of George Rosensteel, who started the Electric Map museum in Gettysburg. Eventually, it became a part of the Rider collection in Gettysburg, which remained in the family until The Horse Soldier purchased the collection in June 2016.   [jet]
