This is a chunk of a US 3” Hotchkiss artillery shell consisting of the lower portion of the iron nose section of the shell and the complete lead sabot. An early recovery, it still has dirt in the cavities and recesses. The iron is rusty and the lead is covered with dirt and light gray patina. The sabot also features three sets of museum reference numbers done in white paint. The oldest is probably from whoever recovered the piece. The second number (8-45e) is from the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, PA. In their notes, this number identifies the shell fragment as coming from the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. A third number (03.11.59a) is from the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall Museum, also in Pittsburgh, PA. This was acquired from them in September of 2003.
A very nice, large chunk of artillery shell fragment from the Battle of Gettysburg…with provenance! [jet]
