Item Code: 889-64

This is a Model 1840 N.C.O. sword. In very good overall condition, these swords were carried by Federal non-commissioned officers as a sign of authority in the ranks. Sword is approximately 39” long and has no scabbard. The 32” long straight sword blade exhibits a tarnished silver color cover with darker speckles overall. Obverse ricasso bears worn stamps of the inspector’s initials and “1863”. The sword’s brass hilt features a simulated wire-wrap grip, a double shell-style guard, and a single-branch knucklebow. The three brass pieces that make up the hilt are each stamped with the number “81”. All brass has an uncleaned, mellow bronze patina. The knucklebow is also stamped with inspector’s mark “A.D.K.”.

This sword comes with an interesting provenance. It was once a part of the Dobbin House Museum, Gift Shop, and Diorama. Now, the Dobbin House is better known as a restaurant here on Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg. However, back in it's history, the structure once housed a diorama and an extensive collection of artifacts. The diorama was in its heyday during the 1960s when it was a relatively popular attraction. Curvin Heiss was the building’s owner at that time. The Dobbin House museum, gift shop, and diorama closed for good in 1975.   [jet]
